COUNTING BREATHS
The traditional suggestion for getting to sleep was to try counting sheep. This practice works in a similar way—if the mind is particularly busy, we can count our breaths as a way of steadying our attention and moving our attention out of the head (thinking) and into the body.
In this practice, we count up to ten and then start again. When you find yourself going beyond 10, simply start again at 1. You can do this practice lying in bed or sitting in the same way as Paying Attention to the Breath on pages 61–62.
